I remember the first time I developed a keen interest in a cemetery. I was in New York City visiting the Old Trinity Church on Wall Street. There on the church grounds was the tombstone and final resting place of Robert Fulton, the inventor of the steamboat. Just a few yards away was the gravesite of Alexander Hamilton, the famous statesman and contemporary of George Washington. I was hooked. Walking through an old historic cemetery is a perfect union of my love of the outdoors with my love for history. As a sixth generation Texan, and a Son of the Republic of Texas, the old historic cemeteries of Texas are of special interest to me. The Marshall Cemetery in Marshall, Texas, and the Jones-Latham Cemetery near Shelbyville, Texas, house the final resting places of my ancestors, including my great, great, great grandfather, who moved to the Republic of Texas in 1837. As I ride the beautiful roads and scenic byways with my fellow Republic of Texas Riders, I include visits to those historic cemeteries and famous gravesites along the way. This site will continue to grow as I make those visits and immerse myself in the stories they tell.
